Murrabit Cod Challenge 2022
The annual Murrabit Cod Challenge was held over the weekend of the 19th-21st of March. An event successfully run each year by the Murrabit Football and Netball Club to raise funds for their club. The event has been running since 2009 and is run 100% by local volunteers. Entries for the competition were capped at 300 adult tickets and were joined by 40 juniors this year.
River conditions were very low but that didn't seem to affect the fish biting. A total of 13 legal size Murray Cod over 55cm were measured and 4 Yellow Belly over 30cm. It was also noted that a large amount of undersized Murray Cod were caught and released.
The lucky winner of the major raffle, a 399 Stacer Proline Boat, 25 HP 4-Stroke Yamaha Motor and Trailer was won by Frank Martin from West Footscray who has been attending the event for the past 8 years. Second raffle prize winner was Baxter McKay with an engel portable fridge/freezer and Geoff Fullford scored the electric boat motor. Kieran Martin from Epping was the early bird entry winner taking home a Gasmate 2 Burner BBQ Stove. The largest group to enter the event was again ‘Hookem’ with 38 participants in their group.
Organisers were happy with the overall running of the event and praised the hard working local volunteers. It was also noted the event would not be possible without the support of their generous sponsors in Molin’s Motorcycle & Marine, Murrabit Trading, Blue Sky Swan Hill, Engel, Hunter Marine, Hookem Fishing, Craig McCluskey, Geoff Gillingham, Barry Tanner from Boatcatch, AB Building Constructions, Glenn Solomano & Johnson’s Auto Marine & Caravan Centre.
